Last Tuesday, May 23, 2023, Adobe announced a groundbreaking new feature for Photoshop: Generative Fill. This feature, powered by Adobe's generative AI Firefly, will be directly integrated into design workflows, representing an innovative leap in how users interact with the image editing software.
The novelty promises to be the world's first creativity and design copilot, providing a magical way of working. Users will be able to add, extend, or remove image content non-destructively in a matter of seconds, using simple text instructions. This beta version of Photoshop is the first step in a major Adobe initiative to integrate generative AI across all its Creative Cloud, Document Cloud, Experience Cloud, and Adobe Express products.
Adobe already has more than a decade of AI innovation under its belt, delivering hundreds of intelligent features through Adobe Sensei. Firefly, its generative AI model suite, brings even more accuracy, power, speed, and ease directly to content creation and editing workflows.
Firefly was launched six weeks ago with an initial focus on image generation and text effects. Since its launch, it has been expanded to support vector recolouring and generative filling. The first version of the model was trained on Adobe Stock images, open license content, and other unrestricted public domain content.
By integrating Firefly directly into workflows as a creative copilot, Adobe aims to accelerate ideation, exploration, and production for all its customers. Ashley Still, Senior Vice President of Digital Media at Adobe, stated: "Generative Fill combines the speed and ease of generative AI with the power and accuracy of Photoshop, allowing customers to bring their visions to life at the speed of their imaginations."
Generative Fill, powered by Firefly, automatically combines perspective, lighting, and image style to enable users to achieve stunning results. This feature expands creative expression and productivity and enhances the creative confidence of creators. It will also be available as a web tool.
Additionally, Adobe has updated Photoshop with new capabilities that enhance and accelerate creative workflows. New presets, contextual toolbar, removal tool, and enhanced gradients allow users to make complex edits and create unique designs more quickly and efficiently.
Photoshop's Generative Fill functionality is available in the beta desktop application today and will be available to everyone in the second half of 2023.
Adobe is changing the world through digital experiences. Firefly, Adobe's suite of generative AI models, brings even more accuracy, power, speed, and ease directly into Adobe workflows. This offering is the most distinct generative AI on the market, trained on a unique dataset that generates commercially viable, professional-quality content.
Adobe Sensei GenAI services are redefining how businesses deliver customer experiences, offering more speed and productivity in all Adobe Experience Cloud workflows. Sensei GenAI will enable brands to generate and modify text-based experiences instantly at any customer touchpoint, leveraging various large language models (LLMs). These innovations are anchored in the Adobe Experience Platform (AEP), which unites customer data and content across the organization under a single language model.
As a trusted partner for individuals and businesses of all sizes, Adobe develops and deploys all AI capabilities with a customer-centric approach and in accordance with its AI ethics principles to ensure content and data transparency. Generative Fill supports Content Credentials, playing a vital role in letting people know whether a piece of content was created by a human, generated by AI, or edited by AI. Content Credentials are like "nutrition labels" for digital content and remain associated with the content wherever it is used, published, or stored, enabling proper attribution and helping consumers make informed decisions about digital content.
In addition to the new features, Adobe has updated Photoshop with new capabilities that enhance and accelerate creative workflows. New Presets, Contextual Toolbar, Removal Tool, and Enhanced Gradients allow users to make complex edits and create unique designs while saving time.
